Basic stitches of Crocheting

 Basic stitches of Crocheting

Hello,
Welcome to sugar & honey crafts. This is my first blog, let me say about myself a little. I learned crocheting from my mother. she just taught me some basics. I developed it by watching some YouTube videos, So in this blog, I am going to talk about the basics of crocheting and what I have learned at the beginning with some video tutorials.

1. What is crochet?

Crocheting is a method of making fabric using small loops of yarn called stitches. You make these stitches by pulling the yarn through loops on a hook. The stitch patterns you use determine what type of fabric you end up with.

2. What materials do I need?

To crochet, you'll need some thread, hooks (or needles), yarn, a tapestry needle, and a crocheter's pattern.

3. How do I get started?

Start by selecting a project and finding a pattern. You can buy yarn at craft stores or online. If you're looking for something specific, check out our yarn section.

TYPES OF YARN:

There are many different options for both animal and plant fibers.

  • Wool yarn: Wool is an ideal choice for practicing and mastering crochet stitches. It is a resilient fiber; hence you are free to make mistakes while learning. They are easy to unravel and reuse.
  • Cotton yarn: Cotton is a rigid fiber, making it a bit of a challenge than wool. The same quality makes it an excellent choice for specific projects, where you need the item to hold its shape.
  • Acrylic yarn: All in all, acrylic is a popular fiber amongst crochet enthusiasts and It is widely available. It comes in various colors and it is one of the more affordable yarn choices. If you are a novice crocheter, by all means, go for it.
TYPES OF STITCHES:

  • chain stitch (ch)
  • slip stitch
  • single crochet (sc)
  • double crochet (dc)
  • Half double crochet (hdc)
  • treble Crochet (tr)
Chain stitch:

chain stitch is the basic stitch of crocheting. The first thing, I learned about crochet is chain stitch. it is abbreviated in a pattern as 'Ch '.
First, make a slip knot using Hook. hold the hook with your right hand like holding a pencil. Hold the slip knot using you're thumb finger and ring finger. Hold the thread between your index and middle finger for thread tension ( see the pic below).
keep the hook upwards and rotate the hook, and pull over the thread into the slip knot .have a grip on the thread, according to the tension of your thread, the chain will tighten or loosen. Make a chain According to you're Pattern.

Single crochet stitch:

Take your hook. Put the hook in the last chain. insert the hook on the top of the 2nd chain stitch. wrap your hook with the yarn;  you'll have 2 loops. Again wrap your yarn in the hook and pull through both loops. There are 4 types of single crochet.

  1. yarn over / yarn over
  2. yarn under / yarn under
  3. yarn under / yarn over
  4. yarn over / yarn under

yarn over / yarn over

Insert your hook in your stitch .hold you're yarn using your thumb and index finger ( I use my left hand to Hold my yarn). Put the yarn over the hook and pull through. Practice more.

Note: The stitches look like V and there is a little bit of space between the stitches

Yarn under / yarn under :

Insert your hook in your stitch. Draw a loop up. you should have 2 loops in your hook. Then, yarn under and pull through both loops on you're Hook.

Note: When you're working on Yarn under in single crochet, It's a little bit tighter than usual single crochet. It looks like boxy stitches

Yarn under / yarn over :

It's a combination of both. Insert your hook and yarn under the stitch and yarn over into the loop and pull through.
Note: It's a little bit tighter.

Yarn over / yarn Under :

Insert you're  Hook in stitches and yarn over the stitch and yarn under into the loop and pull through.

Slip stitch:

A slip stitch has very little height. It is used to join stitches that are worked in rounds. It's also used to make new rows for your crochet.
Insert your hook in the next stitch. pull the yarn underneath through the loop. You get 2 loops. instead of yarnover, you need to pull through the same circle ( pull through the new loop you made ) into the first loop.

Double Crochet stitch:

Take your hook. Put the hook in the last chain. wrap your hook with the yarn and Insert the hook on the top of the 3rd chain stitch you'll have 3 loops. Again wrap your yarn again in the hook and pull through on the first 2 loops, again you have 2 loops. Again, wrap your yarn in a hook and pull through on both loops.

Half Double Crochet stitch:

Half-double crochet is the same as double crochet, it has a very slight difference. Take your hook. Put the hook in the last chain. wrap your hook with the yarn and Insert the hook on the top of the 3rd chain stitch you'll have 3 loops. Again wrap your yarn again in the hook and pull through all the Loops (all 3 loops ).

Treble Crochet stitch:

Take your hook. Put the hook in the last chain. wrap your hook with the yarn once and again wrap the yarn around the hook (2 times, you'll need to wrap your yarn around the Hook), and Insert the hook on the top of the 4th chain stitch you'll have 4 loops. Again wrap your yarn again in the hook and pull through on the first 2 loops, again you have 3 loops. Again wrap your yarn again in a hook and pull through on the Next 2 loops, again you have 2 loops. Again, wrap your yarn in a hook and pull through on both loops.

QUICK TIPS :

  • When knitting, try to keep the thread as close to the needle as possible. You can knit faster if you don't have to make as many movements to wind the yarn around the needle. Learn to read charts in both knitting and crocheting. It's so easy when you do because you can see what should happen.
  • You only have one set of eyes. When they're tired, put your work aside, and give them a rest.
  • Don't be afraid to try new things. We like to stay with what's comfortable, but we can end up in a rut. Tackle cables, colorwork, or whatever scares you. Be calm and do patiently.
  •  Start with a Simple Pattern and Try to develop it every day
There are a lot of stitches in crochet however this is very basic, which I have learned in the beginning. I even hold hooks differently but after a few years, I have learned to hold a crochet hook-like pencil. I hope you too will learn more than me. I am very curious to see all your work

Thank you so much
